5 Ways to Get Organized and Buy Back Time

2013 March 11 by

When people talk about what money can’t buy you there is always a big debate. Some people think money can buy you happiness, whereas others will tell you this is not true. The reason this is so debatable is because nobody really agrees, but something people do agree on is that you can’t buy time. They tell you not to waste time because you will never get it back. Once you’ve gone to sleep that is another day of your life assigned to the record books.

How the Pen Evolved from a Paintbrush Into a Instrument of Writing Perfection

2012 April 13 by

Rebloged from this Gizmodo post

Yeah, you can those blue Bic pens in bulk if you want—a boatload costs about as much as your morning coffee. And all pens are pretty much the same, right? Of course not. Cheapo pens are much more likely to leave ink smeared across your nose, bleeding through your pants pocket, or glopping up your page.

But even cheap pens were state-of-the-art at one time. Let’s take a look at how writing with ink has evolved over the centuries.

Antimicrobial from Agion Introduces Agion Active Base Layer

2012 March 22 by

Samsill produces the most innovative products in the industry. Our Antimicrobial binder was the first of its kind and still is the best of its kind. Our Clean Touch Antimicrobial binder uses the All natural silver-based antimicrobial additive by Agion. It prevents the growth of bateria, mold and mildew of the binder’s surface promoting cleaner offices, schools, and hospitals.

Agion is a partner of ours and last year a few companies rolled out base layers that incorporate the antimicrobial technology from Agion. Our friends over at gear.com had the write up.

I’ve had a number of base layers in my day — most of which haven’t survived, because of a few rips or sometimes just their general grunginess after a fair amount of usage. And there are more than a few of those that were tossed after having been loaned to a friend, whose B.O. unwittingly sped the item along its path towards the rubbish heap.

For those of us in this camp that is constantly searching for base layers that treat us right, a new material is in town: Agion Active. As eVent fabric opened the doors to a world beyond Gore-Tex in the outerwear category, perhaps Agion Active will do the same to move us beyond some of the age-old options we’ve lived with in base layers (Capilene, anyone?).

Agion Active is built to be anti-microbial to fight the stink of normal base layers. It’s secret sauce? A fabric finish technology that Agion claims is capable of making gear and materials that never smell. Agion says thecornerstone of this technology is silver, which doesn’t surprise me — for years silver has been considered a home remedy for killing microbes. That’s where the term “silver spoon” comes from — some claim that during the terrible infections and plagues that spread throughout Europe years ago, the wealthy would give their children a spoon made of sterling silver to suck on and it would help kill any germs they might incidentally ingest. As a result, to this day many individuals looking for natural alternatives to antibiotics, etc, will take a bit of colloidal silver (sometimes to unusual effect).

So it makes sense that this same approach could be used to kill smelly microbes in materials, namely base layers in this case.

Having used the shirt in a number of quite sweaty situations such as skinning into the backcountry in mid-winter or skiing hard all day at Snowbird in mid-June (yes, the lifts are still open!), I can say that this shirt is not nearly as stinky as most of my other base layers. I’m pretty stunned, in fact. I even loaned the shirt to a few friends who tried their best to stink it up — and the shirt has not come close to reaching the stink level of other materials.

At first impression, I would say that Agion Active has some good potential. What’s more, it’s a finish that can easily be applied at the end of the manufacturing process — meaning that it could possibly be used to promising effect for products other than outdoor gear, such as carpets and pet products. Seems like Agion may have taken some old medicine and put it to creative new use.

8 Uses For Binders

2012 March 21 by

The ring binder was first patented in 1854 and since then they have been used for many things. The binder is the most efficient way to organize all kinds of materials. Since binders come in different sizes, colors, materials, and capacities, they are a universal tool for any type of organizational need. Binders also allow the user to become creative in what a binder is used for. Possibilities are endless when it comes to the many uses of binders.

Samsill has one of the widest, if not the widest, array of binder selection in the industry. There are WAY more than 8 uses for them but here are 8 that others have found useful.

Here are 8 uses for ring binders:

1. Sales pricing books
2. Owner’s manuals or employee handbooks can be easily organized into a binder
3. Organize school materials, homework, etc.
4. Organizing collections: Whether you collect stamps, baseball cards, or other memorabilia, plastic sheets and inserts are a great place to put collections and can be easily placed into a binder
5. Binders can make great scrapbooks or photo albums
6. Easel binders allow for making presentations easy
7. If you have a bunch of recipes lying around, a binder can be used to make a cookbook
8. A binder was originally created to hold loose leaf paper, which is a great place to write a journal, a book, or track goals

These are just a few examples of how binders can be used, but there are many more uses out there. Binders make organization easy and convenient, especially with binder accessories such as tabs and page protectors.

8 Uses for Binders - Samsill

The Binders For Life series from Samsill are great binders to use for any of the 8 uses for binders.

Maestre said, “There is true fragility to the sometimes brutal aspect of the sculptures, vulnerability that is belied by the fearsome texture.”

Being an office products company like us, we focus a lot of energy on how do our products make other office workers happy.  While our cool and innovative products can help, the most important thing is company culture. Read the post below from DailyInfographic.

Call it a “case of the Mondays,” but surveys and studies show Americans’ happiness in the workplace decreasing each year. It is no coincidence that as job security ebbs happiness dissipates with it. But there are other factors to employee happiness at work, and the infographic below takes a stab at why you should care.

Recycled Binder Uses – Making an Aerodynamic Kit For A Lamborghini Out Of Two Three Inch Binders

2012 February 24 by

A good friend of mine, Mark from Marketing, is a car enthusist as well as a skier from Monaco.  He put a ski box on top of his Lambo but didn’t like the speed limit that put on his car. So he created a DIY aerodynamic kit for his Lambo out of binders.  Just another way to reuse old binders!!

From his blog:

I know you are not supposed to put a ski box on a Lambo and I do know that you are an absolute idiot if decide to build an aerodynamic improvement on the car with a some card board and duct tape. I guess that makes me a super idiot! Haha

As Janni will be waiting for me in Monaco tomorrow I decided that I am going to get there as fast as I can after the race. So I decided to design an aero modification that I think will help the drag, creating better fuel economy and most importantly taking away our high speed limit… ;-)

Stay tuned tomorrow to see how our modification worked, I must say that with our only option of some card board and duct tape we did a pretty good job! 250km/h+ here we come? ;-)

The 3-ring binder is useful because not only does it keep papers organized, but it also helps keep papers protected from dirt or grime.

Fungi Discovered In The Amazon Will Eat Plastic

2012 January 31 by

This story comes to us from the great people over at Co.Exist.  Here is an excerpt from their article.

The Amazon is home to more species than almost anywhere else on earth. One of them, carried home recently by a group from Yale University, appears to be quite happy eating plastic in airless landfills.

The group of students, part of Yale’s annual Rainforest Expedition and Laboratory with molecular biochemistry professor Scott Strobel, ventured to the jungles of Ecuador. The mission was to allow “students to experience the scientific inquiry process in a comprehensive and creative way.” The group searched for plants, and then cultured the microorganisms within the plant tissue. As it turns out, they brought back a fungus new to science with a voracious appetite for a global waste problem: polyurethane.

The common plastic is used for everything from garden hoses to shoes and truck seats. Once it gets into the trash stream, it persists for generations. Anyone alive today is assured that their old garden hoses and other polyurethane trash will still be here to greet his or her great, great grandchildren. Unless something eats it.

The fungi, Pestalotiopsis microspora, is the first anyone has found to survive on a steady diet of polyurethane alone and–even more surprising–do this in an anaerobic (oxygen-free) environment that is close to the condition at the bottom of a landfill.

Student Pria Anand recorded the microbe’s remarkable behavior and Jonathan Russell isolated the enzymes that allow the organism to degrade plastic as its food source. The Yale team published their findings in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology late last year concluding the microbe is “a promising source of biodiversity from which to screen for metabolic properties useful for bioremediation.” In the future, our trash compactors may simply be giant fields of voracious fungi.

mushrooms

This is great news for us and the rest of the world.  Plastics can be very harmful to the environment.  That is why we, at Samsill, take such great care to recycle almost everything, use post consumer content, use as little plastic as possible without degrading performance, and buy our supplies through environmentally friendly suppliers.

We also have the ONLY traditional biodegradable binder on the market. It is one of our top sellers and it is fully biodegradable (meaning it breaks down in a traditional landfill environment unlike most plastics).  2012 is going to be a HUGE year for us because we are introducing quite a few new, full environmentally friendly, products to the binder market.

Stay tuned for more.

Ten Questions For Success

2012 January 24 by

I, Mark in Marketing, wrote this blog for my personal website but I think it high beneficial so I decided to re-post it here. I do believe strongly in my methods below and I think it could help all! Enjoy! Feedback is ALWAYS appreciated! Thanks!

I love to be busy. In fact, if I don’t have 10 different things on my plate at once I find that I’m not near as productive as when I do.  Being busy demands organization. I’ve become quite a “list” junkie. I live off my to do lists and outlook calendars and reminders.  Another responsibility that comes with being busy is to take time to stop.  “Smell the roses” as they say. Stopping gives me time to reflect on how I am doing in the grand scheme of things. Often my foresight gets shortsighted. I’m thinking only in hours or days in advance. Stopping gives me the ability to look 5, 10 years in advance. It allows me to ask questions like,

“What do I want for my life in 5 years?”

“Is what I am doing now helping me towards that goal?”

It is essential to reflect and look forward. But more than anything it is vital to enjoy where I am NOW. Stopping lets me do that.

I read an INC Magazine article yesterday that had GREAT advice that I am going to start doing each day.  It gave 10 questions to ask myself each day to evaluate my day and make sure what I am doing is worth my time. Here is an excerpt.  I recommend everyone to find their, “stopping time.” Find time each day to ask yourself these questions. I strongly believe it will help.

Real success comes from the quality of your relationships and the emotions that you experience each day. That’s where these 10 questions come in.

Ask them at the end of each day and I absolutely guarantee that you’ll become more successful. Here they are:

1. Have I made certain that those I love feel loved?

2. Have I done something today that improved the world?

3. Have I conditioned my body to be more strong flexible and resilient?

4. Have I reviewed and honed my plans for the future?

5. Have I acted in private with the same integrity I exhibit in public?

6. Have I avoided unkind words and deeds?

7. Have I accomplished something worthwhile?

8. Have I helped someone less fortunate?

9. Have I collected some wonderful memories?

10. Have I felt grateful for the incredible gift of being alive?

Here’s the thing.  The questions you ask yourself on a daily basis determine your focus, and your focus determines your results.

These questions force you to focus on what’s really important. Take heed of them and rest of your life—especially your work—will quickly fall into place.

What Will 6 Million Matches and 16 Years of Life Get You? Awesomeness

2012 January 17 by

Via My Modern Met

Think you have the time, dedication and patience to create an artwork like this? First, try and comprehend these numbers. 6 million matches. 16 years of life. Bulgarian artist Plamen Ignatov used that many matches and spent that much time to create this impressive miniature model of the Rila Monastery. Made of wood, matches and gems, it’s now on display at the Museum of Archaeological in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The Rila Monastery is the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. It is regarded as one of Bulgaria’s most important cultural, historical and architectural monuments and is a key tourist attraction for both Bulgaria and Southern Europe. It has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Things Babies Born in 2011 Will Never Know

2011 December 1 by

As 2011 comes to a close, Samsill, wants to reminisce a bit. We make office products (along with some other things) and as society gets more technological commodity products are often forgotten about.  It is  true that a lot of commodity products are declining and eventually won’t be needed anymore. Technology is quickly replacing a good portion of the industry.  With that said, there are new commodity products that work with technology that are quickly on the rise. At Samsill we like to look forward to where the industry is going.  It is an exciting time in our industry and we are putting the pedal to the metal to say ahead of the curve.

Below is a list from Yahoo with some interesting things that babies born in the last 12 months will never know about.  What surprised us was some of these things listed aren’t that old themselves.

WouldBeWaste

2011 November 22 by

One, of many, of our motto’s here at Samsill is “Do not throw out a material that can be reused or recycled.”  We strive to reuse and recycle all waste, scraps, etc.  WouldBeWaste.com has a similar motto which is why we love their products.  They have neat and intuitive ways to reuse, what otherwise, would be trash.

Their first products are reused wood for a desk. What they said about their product:

Our first range of products are unique desktop accessories made in small batches and finished by hand. Designed to display a clock, Post-it notes and iPhone holder. Each product will have a limited and numbered run of ten.

We are also producing a selection of one-off products to include a Table Lamp and Wall Clock. All of the materials used to create these products were saved from the recycling bin of stores, workshops and studios across London.

The World’s Biggest Binder

2011 November 18 by

The TITAN 6″ BINDER – Samsill Corp.

The first ever six inch binder. It is the largest binder on the market. The Titan is made of heavy-duty construction and supported by a locking heavy-duty D-ring.  Most impressive this binder holds over 1200 pages.  No other binder comes close to the TITAN’s storage capacity.

The TITAN comes in 3 different styles.

First, it is available in our Antimicrobial Reference Binder (163 series).  This binder not only holds 1200+ pages but it also doesn’t allow germs to grow on its major surfaces.  That is a big deal for anyone that is going to have a lot of different hands touching this binder!

Second, the TITAN comes in our standard NON-stick D-Ring view binder.

Customizable nonstick clear overlay on front, back and spine material is environmentally friendly and will not stick or lift copy from cover inserts or contents.

Acid-free, archival safe polypropylene. Locking D-ring keeps documents secure and holds up to 25% more sheets than standard round rings. Two clear inside pockets for additional storage of loose papers. Holds sheet size 8.5×11. Contains 46% post-consumer recycled content.

Upcycled World Made from Old Computers

2011 November 17 by

We post a lot of recycling and upcycling content on this blog, but for good reason.  Recycling is more than just a passing “green” fad.  Recycling possibilities are truly endless. Every day there is hundreds of new posts online about neat new ways to recycle and upcycle.  Samsill is committed to sustainability, which is why we love to post about recycling.  3 ring binders aren’t something a lot of people think about when the words “biodegradable” or “environmentally friendly” come up.

Samsill is trying to change that stereotype.  We currently have the worlds only traditional biodegradable binder and we are working on a lot more environmentally friendly products to hit the market soon.  More on that later. For now, lets enjoy how incredibly awesome this world map made from computers is.

(Via LikeCool)

British artist Susan Stockwell has completed a gigantic world map(21 feet x 13 feet), the map made from recycled computer components for the University of Bedfordshire. The piece uses motherboards, electrical wiring, fans, and myriad other components.” Jump more see more pics.\

America Recycles Day and a Good Feeling Video for this Tuesday

2011 November 15 by

Today (November 15th, 2011) is America Recycles Day.  Here is what the website says:

Since 1997, communities across the country have come together on November 15 to celebrate America Recycles Day. More than a celebration, America Recycles Day is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to the promotion of recycling in the United States. One day to educate and motivate. One day to get our neighbors, friends and community leaders excited about what can be accomplished when we all work together. One day to make recycling bigger and better 365 days a year. Get involved!

Help the world we live in, take the pledge to recycle and reuse instead of discard.  Here at Samsill we took the pledge. We use 100% recycled chip board any time we can. And all of our products are made up of at least some recycled material.  We also make the ONLY traditional biodegradable binder.  If you choose to throw it away instead of recycling it (which all of our binders are 100% recyclable) the binder will break down in <5 years as opposed to 20+ year.

Ergonomics.  Not a word that is often used and therefore not a word that a lot of people know.  Ergonomics is defined as the study of designing equipment and devices that fit the human body, its movements, and its cognitive abilities.

The Economics of Ergonomics (via HumanScale)

Ergonomics has much more to it than simply promoting comfort and reducing injury risks. Good ergonomics increases productivity and employee morale. It reduces costs and contributes to company goals; therefore impacting the bottom line.

The largest and most important assets of any organization are the employees. A good ergonomics program is the best way to maximize their potential.

Breast Cancer & Plastic

2011 October 13 by

What to use & what not to use

I must thank our friends at the Think Pink, Live Green column on breastcancer.org for this week’s blog.

Plastic. It is a polarizing material. Love it or hate it there is no denying it or getting away from it. Plastic has helped revolutionize the world in many ways but it has also caused its fair share of problems. It isn’t healthy to ingest…at all. Cancer and many other diseases have been linked back to plastics. There are a bunch of different types of plastic and each has different issues. This post is to help you become knowledgeable about the material and figure out what is okay to have around and what is unhealthy. Continue reading »

Uncommon Recycling

2011 October 12 by

It is well known that Samsill is environmentally conscious but one thing a lot of people may not know is that we like to advocate recycling awareness.

Recycling aluminum, paper, & plastic has been around for years.  Yet there are so many other things that most people just throw away because they do not know they can be recycled.  Binders are a great example.  Another item a lot of us either throw away or keep in the back of our closet is our old athletic shoes.  Who knew you could recycled those (or give them to people in need)? Media Management & Apple’s iPhone Example

2011 October 5 by

This is a post I, Mark B, wrote for my personal blog but I think it fits well for us as a company too.  As an office products manufacturing company we produce new products and have product rollouts.  Introducing office supplies to the world isn’t clearly as glamorous as introducing the next iPhone but both us and Apple face the same difficulties.  Managing consumer expectations is a top priority when introducing new things. Consumers with low expectations are going to be “blow away” with quality products and will tell all their friends how great a product is. On the other hand, consumers with high expectations are a lot more likely to be let down or have their expectations met. Both of which are less likely to merit peer to peer marketing.

Apples announcement of the iPhone 4S yesterday is a great example of a company that didn’t manage consumer expectations. Below is the post I wrote.

City of Hope – The Power of Hope Campaign

2011 October 4 by

The Power of Hope is the largest and most comprehensive fundraising campaign in City of Hope’s history. This ambitious initiative will raise $1 billion in support of its mission — to cure and prevent cancer, diabetes and other life-threatening diseases. The campaign will culminate in 2013, City of Hope’s centennial.

Since its founding, its work has been advanced by generous individuals, corporations, foundations and chapters from across the country. This national support has already helped it raise $550 million of its $1 billion goal.

Today, City of Hope is better positioned than ever before to change the landscape of cancer research and treatment.

Top 10: Things to Look for When Buying a Binder

2011 September 30 by

It is time, once again, for a new TOP 10 list.  Sometimes in life we have to make hard decisions about big purchases.  Buying a TV, for example, is a big purchase that generally includes a lot of research trying to figure out what is the best TV for you.  Other purchases include little to no thinking, like buying office supplies.  Most people go into Staples looking for something in particular, like a binder.  Once in the store they go directly toward the binder aisle and pick out the first binder that fits their needs.

This week we’d like to challenge the traditional thought process about buying office supplies by giving you 10 things to genuinely think about when buying a binder.  A binder, like a computer, holds important papers, photos, etc. Why wouldn’t you take the same care when purchasing a binder like you do when purchasing a computer?

This week’s top 10 is comprised of input from all employees here at Samsill as well as some close friends that are current students.  The responses are recorded in order from most frequent response to least frequent.

Education and Office Supplies Giving Back

2011 September 22 by

Everyone has their opinions about our education system but I think that one thing most people can agree upon is that there are a lot of underprivileged kids that aren’t getting a good enough education.  At Samsill we do everything we can to help the efforts of those trying to help the education system.

Here is an opportunity for you to help out as well. An excerpt from NBC News:

Come to the Plaza and help TODAY help America’s kids and their teachers with school supplies.

Join TODAY and NBC News for Education Nation–a special week of programming focusing on improving education in America. From September 26th to September 30th, we’ll have a special collection during the live show.  These items will go to schools hurt by budget cuts and teachers who spend their own money to support their students.

Now’s your chance to help our nation’s students. Come to Rockefeller Plaza. Bring new, unused school supplies, such as notebooks, pens, pencils, rulers, book covers, backpacks, pencil cases, crayons, erasers, and calculators.  When you visit, you may meet a special guest who cares about our nation’s schools as much as we do.

If you can’t be here in person, you can still help in your own community.  Just go to
DonorsChoose.org/EducationNation to help your classrooms thrive and schoolchildren succeed.

And be sure the visit the Education Nation Experience in Rockefeller Plaza from September 23rd to the 27th.

If you’re in NYC and reading this then we highly encourage you to donate some of those old Samsill binders you aren’t using anymore! Or go to the Donors Choose site to help those kids who aren’t getting the school supplies they need.

Turkey soccer game with only women and children

2011 September 21 by

This is a bit off subject from office supplies but it is extremely interesting and comical so why not post it?!

From Business Insider:

Due to crowd violence at recent rival soccer games at Fenerbahce’s stadium, Turkey’s soccer association took a new approach. They banned all the men, and let women and children under age 12 attend for free.

On Tuesday, 41,000 women and children attended the game against Mansasipor. Instead of fights throughout the crowd, the visiting team was welcomed with cheers, and both teams threw flowers into the crowd.

Sometimes innovation and creativity is the best solution for a looming problem.

A True Hero

2011 September 19 by

Good Monday morning Samsill fans!  Samsill is highly committed to giving back to those around us. That is why we have products in our “Binders For Life” campaign that are more than just binders. Each binder is meant to help a greater cause, like Breast Cancer or the environment.

All of our binders are also made 100% in the USA. Our manufacturing facility is located in Fort Worth, TX.  When you purchase a binder from us the money you pay is staying right here in the USA!

I am sure most of you have heard about Dakota Meyer, the Marine who recieved the Medal of Honor, but we cannot get enough of his story.  He is a true U.S. hero and we salute him. On top of all that he is raising money for his charity to help children of wounded vets go to college.

How To: 5 Steps to Improve Productivity with Organization

2011 September 8 by

At the end of the day do you feel like you’ve been busy all day but you aren’t actually sure what you accomplished? I know that is a common problem for me (Mark from Marketing) and a lot of other co-workers of mine.  I am responsible for social media at Samsill and as anyone who spends any time on the internet knows, there is A LOT of information blasting through it every second.  Information overload.  Samsill is a smaller company which means I also have other responsibilities, besides marketing, that I must do each day.  Before I know it, it is 5pm and even though I have been busy all day I find myself asking, “What did I actually accomplish today?”

I quickly had to learn how to manage all the information and also allot time to accomplish other tasks.  Working for a binder company allows me to keep my papers organized but it didn’t help much with digital media.  I have compiled a list of key things I have implemented to keep me sane and help me deal with all the information. (This list is compiled of suggestions that helped me personally; they may not be for everyone.  Take it for what it is worth and I hope they can help you stay organized!)

DFW Airport Highest Ranked Airport for “Green” Usage

2011 September 2 by

Samsill is located in Fort Worth, TX.  We all travel a lot for different purposes but we all see way too much of DFW Airport.  The next time I fly I will be slightly more at ease because DFW was just announced as the highest ranked airport for “green” energy usage by the EPA.

Fort Worth Business Press printed the story on their website.  Below is an excerpt:

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) named Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport
to its National Top 50 list of partner organizations using the most renewable electricity to help
reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions and protect human health.

D/FW Airport ranks at No. 48 among the nation’s top purchasers of renewable energy, and ranks
at No. 8 on the Top 20 Local Government purchasers list produced by the EPA.

D/FW Airport is the highest ranked airport for green energy usage, and one of only two airports
recognized by the EPA.

Glad to see other local companies care as much about the earth as we do here at Samsill.  Don’t forget to check out our biodegradable binders!

Have a great weekend,
